You may be asking yourself ‘why should I care about security?’ This might be because you see your business as of no interest to attackers (this is a myth–small businesses are often attacked), or because you see security as just a cost. We believe that your business security matters.
We recognize that your outgoings are going up, whether this is on staff, workspace rent, raw materials… That’s true across the board. We get it!
However, what is also going up is the number of cyber-attacks of various kinds. That’s not coincidental or surprising—when the economy is weak, crime levels go up.
While it is not easy to show the return on investment for cyber security, here are some key reasons why you should care about your cyber security:
- it can help reduce the risk of security breaches and regulatory fines (and consequent financial loss and reputational damage)
- it can support your business continuity, so that you can continue to work
- it can help support future revenue, through one or more of:
- developing more secure products
- gaining customer trust and building your reputation
- winning more business by becoming a certified organisation (to whatever certifications your industry prefers).
Low cost options
And there are components of security that you can put in place without spending a fortune: add links
- Teaching your staff about the threats to the business
- Insisting that all your staff use strong passwords
- Taking backups of all your data, routinely
- Implementing multi-factor authentication wherever possible
- Updating the software you use wherever possible
- Installing robust antimalware and firewalls (yes, there is a cost to this, but it is important)
- Configure all devices and systems securely—yes, including those in the cloud
- Have a plan for how your business will recover in the case of a cyber incident—and test that plan.
